| The “real-robot” style of animation in early 80’s swept away the previous style of “super-robot” animation. In the late 80’s, however, fans became captivated again by the 70’s “super-robot” animation. With such a backdrop, this animated work, HAJA-TAISEI DANGAIOH, was an intentionally produced in the “super-robot” style as an OVA (Original Video Animation) targeting specific fans. It was produced by young animators like Masaharu Kawamori and Masami Ohari, and directed by Toshihiro Hirano (THE SUPER DIMENSION FORTRESS MACROSS MEGAZONE 23). The main robot Dangaioh was intentionally created with contradictory characteristics often seen in the affected robot animations released before the 70’s. Physically impossible scenes, such as the spontaneous transformation from an airplane into a robot, and a robot arm instantly changing into a missile and back again were signatures of this style. HAJA-TAISEI DANGAIOH also has the historical OVA’s main theme of “beautiful girls and psychics.” This animation was created with the intent of capturing the hearts of “super-robot” animation fans. In addition to achieving great sales, it boasted enormous impact on fans and animation creators alike. As a result, DANGAIOH was featured in the video game, SUPER ROBOT TAISEN (BANPRESTO) and in Kaiyodo’s branded action figure series REVOLTECH. DANGAIOH has also been recognized by new generation and current action figure fans. Dangaioh’s CD album was re-released in 2007. With such enduring popularity, HAJA-TAISEI DANGAIOH has allured the contemporary new media and market. | |
