Joint-Force of International Producers Unite to Recreate “One of the Top Ten Films of All Time”
Lotus, Inc.
September 18, 2008
(Hollywood, September 18, 2008) Harbor Light Entertainment, Inc. and Lotus, Inc. announce the first officially sanctioned remake of the internationally acclaimed director’s 1950 masterpiece, Rashomon. A joint-force of US and international producers have united to produce Rashomon 2010 as a modern-day, English-language film set in the United States.
As an official AK100 project, and in cooperation with Kurosawa Productions, Rashomon 2010 will be produced by Harbor Light Entertainment (US), Lotus (Japan), Lexicon Filmed Entertainment (US) and Upside Down Entertainment (Singapore). Rashomon 2010 will be released theatrically in 2010.
Kurosawa’s original Rashomon (1950) has been cited as “one of the top ten films of all time.”* Released internationally in 1951, Rashomon was the first foreign film to win an Academy Award®, and was the Grand Prize winner of the 1951 Venice Film Festival.
The original Rashomon (1950) was set in 12th Century Japan and is the story of a Samurai’s murder and the rape of his wife in an isolated forest. Rashomon 2010 takes place in small town America and is the story of the murder of a prominent businessman and the rape of his high-society wife. Over the years many films have attempted to recreate the “Rashomon Effect,” but none have been able to capture the complexity and sensibility that Kurosawa brought to the screen more than five decades ago. With great deference to Akira Kurosawa, Rashomon 2010 will closely follow the original work of the celebrated director and will incorporate the original film’s complexities and spirit.

About AK100 Project
2010 is the year of Akira Kurosawa’s birth centenary. Akira Kurosawa was born at the beginning of the 20th Century and died just before the start of the new millennium. He devoted his life to film-making, and the great body of work that he bequeathed to the history of film has had a huge impact both in his native Japan and overseas. His life and work contributed to revolutionizing the entire genre of film. The idea behind the Akira Kurosawa Centenary is not to indulge in nostalgia for films of the past, but to lay the foundations for Japanese films of the future as well as to establish the future course of film-making in general.
