The executive committee of the Seiyu (voice actor) Awards announced that they would launch a new award, “Foreign Fan Award,” in the third Seiyu Awards to be announced and presented at a ceremony scheduled for March 7th, 2009. The Foreign Fan Award will be offered as a special award and the winner will be selected by soliciting votes from non-Japanese fans of anime and voice actors on their official website.
With the wide popularity of Japanese animes abroad, foreign anime fans have become familiar with not only the animes but also the voices of voice actors in them. The popularity of the voice actors has prompted the executive committee of the awards to launch this award. The committee has designed the award, the winner of which is to be decided from the viewpoints of the foreign fans, in accordance with the aim of the Seiyu Awards of “presenting awards to many voice actors by appreciating them from as many viewpoints as possible.”
The selection by the foreign fans will be carried out on the English page to be launched on November 29th in the official site of the Seiyu Awards. The committee simply says that only foreigners will be eligible to vote for the award and, thus, foreigners either in Japan or abroad will be able to cast votes.
A voter will enter the name of the voice actor of her/his choice and the name of character the actor played. The vote will be open from November 29th, 2008, to January 1st, 2009. The vote will be closed on the same day as the ordinary votes for the other awards in the Seiyu Awards which are currently in progress.
In fact, Japanese voice actors have often been invited to events on Japanese animes organized all over the world and welcomed by numerous fans at these events. However, favorite works and voice actors of the foreign fans do not always coincide with those of Japanese fans. Therefore, attention will be on how the viewpoints of the foreign fans, which are different from those of Japanese fans, will be reflected in the selection of the winner of the Foreign Fan Award.
