Tadashi Sudo [Anime! Anime!]
September 21, 2007
On November 1, 2007, Asatsu-DK Inc. (ADK) will open a space named “ADK Anime World” in the “Second Life” virtual world it operates. In the ADK Anime World, the company will operate a large-scale content business, the first of the kind in Second Life. Initially, ADK will license the use of the characters appearing in one of anime titles it holds, “Yokai Ningen Bem.”
The ADK Anime World will be composed of three different zones, “Business Center” handling the planned licensing business, “Yokai Ningen Bem no Yakata” (mansion of demon-man Bem) and “Event Square.”
At the Event Square, a variety of events will be held including the “ADK Anime & Characters Festa” (working title), which is planned to diffuse and stimulate content businesses operated in Second Life’s virtual world. According to ADK, the company plans to discover and foster new characters at ADK Anime & Character Festa, getting individual users involved in it.
“Yokai Ningen Bem no Yakata” will have a “Bem Shiryokan” (Bem resource center) and a “Horror House,” where visitors can have souvenir snapshots with characters of the Bem series as well as have a chance to receive present of original Bem merchandise.
Activities in the “ADK Anime World” will center on business operations. In order to enable the licensing of anime content in Second Life, ADK has developed a digital certificate stamp system exclusively for Second Life. The company intends to block out illegitimate reproduction and resale of anime content in Second Life by using its own DLMS, a system for licensing and managing digital content.
In the ADK Anime World, ADK will not only start anime content business with “Yokai Ningen Bem” but also go between anime content holders who want to operate licensing businesses in Second Life and other companies who want to use such content.
