At World Cosplay Summit 2009 held at Oasis21, Nagoya, Japan, on August 2, Japan’s representative YuRiE won the grand prize. YuRiE is an unit group of two girls YuRi and RiE, and each of them cosplayed as Yukimura Sanada and Masamune Date from SENGOKU BASARA.
World Cosplay Summit celebrated its 7th anniversary this year and the cosplayers’ championship started in 2005. Before, Brazil has won twice and Italy and France have won once each. This is the first time for Japan to win the championship.
In this year, 30 cosplayers from 15 different countries participated in the competition, and each team was tough cosplayers who had won large cosplay events in their own country. In front of 12,000 visitors at the event, cosplayers showed their live performance and Japan won the competition.
World Cosplay Summit’s purpose is interexchange of the youth cultures through manga and cosplay that are made in Japan. The event is getting larger and larger every year in terms of its reputation and event size, and it will be larger on the fans’ expectations after this year for sure.
